Free time depends on the cargo
The port's 2018 tariff gave steel 30 calendar days of free time, against 5 days for aluminum, other non ferrous metals and general cargo. Do not assume the steel rule covers an aluminum coil lot. Ask for the current last free day for your commodity and send it with the release. Dispatch plans the trucks back from that date. This is also North America's top fruit port, with the largest dockside cold storage complex on the continent, so steel shares the gate with reefer trucks. We book the appointment the day the release comes.
Winter plate and coil
Plate and hot and cold rolled coil from a European mill came through Wilmington every winter for at least 13 seasons to 2018. When a winter plate or coil lot lands at Wilmington, coil rides in a Conestoga with the cover closed and plate on an open flatbed or a Conestoga, each truck up to 45,000 lb. TWIC drivers and gate access
Port Wilmington is an MTSA regulated marine terminal, so unescorted access takes a TWIC card. Fission assigns TWIC drivers to US port pickups. When the truck that fits the load has a driver without one, we use local escort services, booked ahead, so the pickup still makes its appointment. Customs: in bond under our own bond
Freight landed at Wilmington is foreign cargo that has not entered the US. It moves on a T&E in bond (the 7512) under Fission's own CBP custodial bond. The port of exportation is Buffalo or Lewiston, New York, or Champlain, New York, for Quebec. No US duty is paid, Section 232 steel and aluminum tariffs included. Your customs broker clears it into Canada at Fort Erie, Queenston or Lacolle.
