Ontario lets a truck with more axles carry more than a tandem can legally take. That's why Fission Logistics keeps 16 multi axle curtainsides in Mississauga, all 50 ft long. Heavy coil, ingots, steel and stone that often take 2 tandems move on 1 truck.
Why we run multi axle trailers
A tandem tops out at 45,000 lb of payload because it's built to weights that are legal on both sides of the border. Our 6 axle units carry up to 86,000 lb inside Ontario, close to twice that.

Fewer trucks means fewer dock appointments and less crane time. The weight math is in why a 6 axle moves 86,000 lb.
The trailer
- 50 ft curtainside on 4 or 6 axles.
- 8 four axle units run Ontario and Quebec. 8 six axle units run Ontario, Michigan, Ohio and Indiana.
- Same securement gear as the rest of the fleet: chains, straps, coil racks, timbers and edge protection.
Lanes
Most of this work runs between Hamilton and the GTA, Kitchener, Cambridge, London and Windsor, plus Quebec on the 4 axle and the US on the 6 axle. If you're paying for 2 trucks on an Ontario lane, ask dispatch whether 1 will do.
Questions shippers ask
How much more can a multi axle carry than a tandem?
A 6 axle carries up to 86,000 lb of payload inside Ontario and into Michigan, and 76,000 lb into Ohio and Indiana. A tandem carries 45,000 lb at 80,000 lb gross. Send the weight and the lane, and dispatch tells you which trailer it goes on.
Does the multi axle run to the US?
The 6 axle units do, into Michigan, Ohio and Indiana. The 4 axle units stay in Ontario and Quebec.
Is it curtainside or open?
Curtainside. The roof and curtain slide open for crane or forklift loading, the same as on our 53 ft Conestogas.
What freight moves on it?
Steel coil, aluminum ingots and sows, structural steel, pipe, stone and pavers.
