Flatbed trucking in Ottawa: steel, rebar and building products
Fission Logistics runs flatbed and Conestoga trucking to and from Ottawa with 80 trucks and 140 trailers, next day from our Mississauga yard, about 450 km on the 401 and 416. Most of what we haul to Ottawa goes to construction: structural steel and rebar for the towers and transit work, precast and building products, and machinery for the plants in Kanata, Nepean and Orleans. Ottawa sits on the lane our trucks already run to Montreal, so there is usually a truck going that way.

What moves to Ottawa
Most of what we haul into Ottawa is going to a construction site or a yard: structural steel and rebar from GTA and Hamilton fabricators, precast and masonry, roofing and building products, and the machinery and racking that fit out the plants and warehouses in Kanata and the south end. Freight coming back is steel and aluminum from eastern Ontario plants and loads out of the Montreal lane.
| Freight | Trailer we send |
|---|---|
| Structural steel: beams, columns, joists, fabricated pieces | Open flatbed, crane loaded; see structural steel and rebar |
| Rebar bundles and mesh | Open flatbed, 45,000 lb on a tandem |
| Shingles, siding, insulation, pallets | Conestoga, kept dry; see building products |
| Precast, stone and masonry | Open flatbed or Conestoga; 6 axle for heavy lots inside Ontario |
| Machinery, generators, HVAC and plant equipment | Conestoga or step deck |
| Modular units, site trailers, wide pieces | Step deck or double drop with an Ontario permit; see oversize |
| A few skids or one bundle | Partial load on a truck already on the lane |
Jobsite deliveries in Ottawa
For a site delivery, the driver needs the site contact, the gate, the unload window and who is lifting. Give dispatch those 4 things with the booking and the driver calls ahead so the crane is not waiting. Steel rides on an open deck so it comes off from the top. Products that must stay dry ride under a Conestoga cover and come off from the side with a forklift. Overlength steel and anything wider than 2.6 m is quoted with the dimensions and gets an Ontario permit, arranged in house.
Trucking companies in Ottawa, Kanata and Orleans
Ottawa is on our Montreal lane, which means trucks are heading that way most days and a load for Kanata, Nepean, Barrhaven or Orleans fits the plan. Kingston, Brockville and Cornwall are on the same 401 run and quote the same way. Gatineau is across the river and quotes as a Quebec delivery. Freight heading west from Ottawa goes to the GTA and Durham on the 401; freight heading east continues to Montreal and Quebec City.
Into the US from Ottawa
New York loads from Ottawa cross at the Thousand Islands Bridge or at Buffalo. Michigan, Indiana and most of Ohio cross at Detroit. We are CTPAT validated and PIP and FAST approved, and dispatch files ACE and ACI on every cross border load. Your customs broker clears the entry. See Ontario to New York and cross border trucking.
How to book an Ottawa load
- Send the pickup and the receiver, with the site contact if it is a jobsite.
- Tell us the commodity, the weight, how it loads, and the dimensions if anything is long, tall or wide.
- Give the date the freight is ready and the unload window.
- We quote within 1 business hour, 7 am to 5 pm ET, Monday to Friday, and name the trailer with the price.
- Confirm, and the load goes on the dispatch board. Ask for a Samsara tracking link and dispatch sends it.

Questions shippers ask
How long does a flatbed load take from Toronto to Ottawa?
Next day. Ottawa is about 450 km from the GTA on the 401 and 416, inside our 500 mile next day radius. A load picked up in the GTA in the morning is usually on an Ottawa site the next morning.
Do you haul structural steel and rebar to Ottawa jobsites?
Yes. Beams, columns, joists and rebar bundles ride on an open flatbed so the crane can pick them from the top. Overlength pieces are quoted with the dimensions, and anything over 2.6 m wide gets an Ontario permit, arranged in house.
Can you deliver to a jobsite without a dock?
Yes. Most Ottawa construction deliveries are crane or forklift unloads on site. Give dispatch the site contact and the unload window, and the driver calls ahead.
Do you run Ottawa to Montreal and Quebec?
Yes. Ottawa, Montreal and Quebec City are on the same lane. An Ottawa pickup can often deliver in Montreal the same day, and a heavy Quebec load rides a 4 axle.
Is Fission an Ottawa trucking company?
We are a flatbed trucking company based in Mississauga, about 450 km from Ottawa, with 80 trucks and 140 trailers. Ottawa is on our Montreal lane, so loads to and from Ottawa deliver next day.
