Port of Baltimore trucking to Ontario and Quebec, in bond

Baltimore steel for Ontario moves on Fission Logistics Conestogas out of Mississauga, Ontario. We pick up coil, plate, pipe and project freight at the Port of Baltimore's Dundalk and North Locust Point terminals and deliver it to plants in Ontario and Quebec. Dundalk keeps weather sensitive coil under cover, and our trailers keep it that way for the run north, about 732 km.

Know which operator has your cargo

Dundalk has several operators on the same terminal, including Ceres Marine Terminals and Ports America Chesapeake. The release, the appointment and the loading all go through the operator holding your cargo. Send the operator name with the release, and dispatch books the right gate the first time instead of finding out at the window.

Free time

The Maryland Port Administration does not publish free time, and it changes by commodity and tariff. Ask the terminal or your forwarder for the last free day in writing when the arrival notice comes, and send it to dispatch with the release. We plan the trucks back from that date.

Heavy and project pieces

North Locust Point's 75 ton cranes take heavy breakbulk. When a piece is tall or wide, it goes on a step deck or double drop, with permits for each state and province on the route. See oversize freight.

TWIC drivers and gate access

Dundalk is an MTSA regulated marine terminal, so unescorted access takes a TWIC card. Fission assigns TWIC drivers to US port pickups. When the truck that fits the load has a driver without one, we use local escort services, booked ahead, so the pickup still makes its appointment. See how we handle TWIC.

Customs: in bond under our own bond

Freight landed at Baltimore is foreign cargo that has not entered the US. It moves on a T&E in bond (the 7512) under Fission's own CBP custodial bond. The port of exportation is Buffalo, Lewiston or Alexandria Bay in New York, or Champlain, New York, for Quebec. No US duty is paid, Section 232 steel and aluminum tariffs included. Your customs broker clears it into Canada at Fort Erie, Queenston, Lansdowne or Lacolle.

For a Baltimore pickup one party files the in bond and reports both ends. Fission files in ACE under our bond. Or your customs broker files under our bond, with our SCAC, FSGQ, and our letter of authorization. Tell dispatch which when you book. Steel a US importer has already entered moves to Canada as a regular export instead. TIB exports and the full process: in bond port pickups.

The run north

Baltimore to Toronto is about 732 km, north through Harrisburg and up the US 15 corridor to the Buffalo area crossings. Each truck takes up to 45,000 lb.

Getting a Baltimore pickup quoted

Send the terminal and the operator, the release or bill of lading number, the vessel and its discharge date. Add the piece count, weights and delivery address. Loads inside 500 miles of the GTA deliver the next business day. Dispatch names the trailer with the price within 1 business hour, 7 am to 6 pm ET, and answers at (905) 799 7900, press 1, 24 hours. What else to send, and how tracking works, is on the port trucking page.

Questions shippers ask

Do you truck from the Port of Baltimore to Canada?

Yes, to Ontario and Quebec. The freight moves in bond under our own US Customs bond to Buffalo or Lewiston, or Champlain for Quebec. Your customs broker clears it into Canada on the other side of the bridge. We do not deliver to US addresses from the port.

Which Baltimore terminals do you pick up from?

Dundalk Marine Terminal and North Locust Point, the two public terminals where we pick up steel. Send the terminal and the operator with the release.

Does Dundalk store coil inside?

The Maryland Port Administration says weather sensitive steel coils at Dundalk are stored in covered space. We keep them covered on the way north in a Conestoga.

How do Quebec loads run from Baltimore?

North and up Interstate 87 to Champlain and the Lacolle crossing for Montreal and the rest of Quebec. Eastern Ontario loads can cross at the Thousand Islands on Interstate 81.
