Port Newark and Port Elizabeth trucking to Ontario and Quebec
Of the US ports we serve, Port Newark is the closest to Montreal, about 589 km up Interstate 87 to Champlain and Lacolle. Fission Logistics trucks breakbulk steel, pipe and project freight from the Port Newark and Port Elizabeth terminals to plants in Quebec and Ontario, in bond under our own US Customs bond, with a TWIC driver at the gate.

The short run to Montreal
From Port Newark the Montreal run goes up Interstate 87 through Albany to Champlain, New York, and across to Lacolle onto Autoroute 15. Pipe, beams and machinery for the Montreal area, Quebec City and the Eastern Townships ride that route. Eastern Ontario loads take Interstate 81 to the Thousand Islands bridge. Toronto and Hamilton loads go west on Interstate 80 to Interstate 90 and cross at Lewiston or Buffalo.
A container port with breakbulk berths
Port Newark and Elizabeth is the third largest container port in the US, and most of its gates are container gates. Breakbulk and project freight land at Red Hook Terminals on Marsh Street and at the project cargo berths. Red Hook names steel among the cargo it handles and runs the port's only on dock customs exam warehouse. Tell dispatch which terminal and operator has your cargo. Each one has its own check in.
Free time
The Port Authority does not publish breakbulk free time, and it changes by commodity and tariff. Ask the terminal or your forwarder for the last free day in writing when the arrival notice comes, and send it to dispatch with the release. We plan the trucks back from that date.
Overweight on Doremus Avenue
Doremus Avenue is the Port Authority's overweight truck route out of Port Newark. Each truck takes up to 45,000 lb at legal weight on the Turnpike and Interstate 87. Heavier pieces are quoted after dispatch checks the route and the permits for New Jersey, New York and Quebec or Ontario.
TWIC drivers and gate access
Port Newark is an MTSA regulated marine terminal, so unescorted access takes a TWIC card. Fission assigns TWIC drivers to US port pickups. When the truck that fits the load has a driver without one, we use local escort services, booked ahead, so the pickup still makes its appointment. See how we handle TWIC.
Customs: in bond under our own bond
Freight landed at Port Newark or Elizabeth is foreign cargo that has not entered the US. It moves on a T&E in bond (the 7512) under Fission's own CBP custodial bond. The port of exportation is Champlain, New York, for Quebec, Alexandria Bay for eastern Ontario, or Lewiston or Buffalo for the rest of Ontario. No US duty is paid, Section 232 steel and aluminum tariffs included. Your customs broker clears it into Canada at Lacolle, Lansdowne, Queenston or Fort Erie.
For a Port Newark pickup one party files the in bond and reports both ends. Fission files in ACE under our bond. Or your customs broker files under our bond, with our SCAC, FSGQ, and our letter of authorization. Tell dispatch which when you book. Steel a US importer has already entered moves to Canada as a regular export instead. TIB exports and the full process: in bond port pickups.
