A 120 inch crate, quoted in 47 minutes, delivered the next morning

A fabricator in Concord needed a 120 inch crate moved from North York. The quote request came in through our website at 8:47 am. It was delivered at 11:34 the next morning.

Fission step deck trailer loaded with machinery

A fabricator in Concord had a 120 inch crate ready at a crate shop in North York. It weighed 800 lb. They filled in the quote form on our website at 8:47 am on a Wednesday and wrote "need a step deck" in the commodity box.

Why it had to be a step deck

Ontario allows a loaded truck up to 4.15 m tall, about 13 ft 7 in. A flatbed deck sits about 5 ft off the road, so a 10 ft crate on a flatbed comes out near 15 ft. That needs a permit and a route survey, for a load that weighs less than a pallet of tile.

The lower deck on our step decks sits 42 inches off the road. 42 inches plus 120 inches is 162 inches, or 13 ft 6 in. Legal, no permit, no escort.

Two questions from dispatch were all it took to price it: tarp or no tarp, and the ready date. The height was already in the request, which is why the trailer choice was easy.

What made it fast

  • The height was in the form. "120 inches high" told dispatch it was a step deck before anyone picked up the phone.
  • One truck, one stop. A dedicated trailer went straight from the crate shop to the plant, with nothing else on the deck.
  • Paperwork the same day. The PO and credit form came back by early afternoon, so the truck was set for the morning.
