The winter port for Ontario steel
Icebreakers keep the St. Lawrence open between Quebec City and Montreal, and steel keeps landing through the winter. When an Ontario plant needs imported beams or coil in February, this is one of the ports it can come in through. In 2025 the first ship of the year carried steel beams and arrived January 2. The port's first ship at Pier 9, in 2018, also carried steel beams that went to customers by truck.
Winter loads stay covered
A winter run from Trois-Rivières to Ontario means salt and slush the whole way. Coil and aluminum ride in a Conestoga with the cover closed. Beams and long steel ride on open flatbeds, tarped when you want them covered. See tarped flatbed trucking.
Customs: CBSA, no US in bond
Trois-Rivières is a Canadian port. Imported freight sits in the terminal's sufferance warehouse until CBSA accepts your customs broker's release request and the terminal shows the goods released. Only then can we load. CBSA allows goods to sit in a sufferance warehouse for up to 40 days from the day they are reported, and the terminal charges its own storage on top. There is no US border and no US in bond on these loads. The customs broker is always yours. Send us the release once it clears and dispatch books the terminal pickup.
Free time
Logistec does not publish free time; it is set by the terminal and changes by commodity. Get the last free day in writing when the arrival notice comes and send it to dispatch with the CBSA release. We plan the trucks back from that date.
The run
West on Autoroute 40 to Montreal, then Autoroute 20 and Highway 401 to Toronto, about 666 km. Montreal, Quebec City and the Eastern Townships are short runs from the port. Heavy loads can go on a 4 axle unit, which runs Ontario and Quebec.
