Flatbed trucking for steel and aluminum service centres
Fission Logistics is a flatbed carrier for steel and aluminum service centres, with 80 trucks and 140 trailers out of Mississauga and coil racks, timbers and chains on every one. We load coil at the Hamilton mills every working day, bring imported coil and plate in from the Quebec, Great Lakes and East Coast ports in bond, run slit coil out to fabricators with several drops, and carry heavy coil lots on 6 axle units at up to 86,000 lb inside Ontario. 106 of the 140 trailers are curtainside, so steel rides dry without a tarp.

Mill to service centre
Coil leaves the Hamilton mills on our trucks every working day for service centres in the GTA, Kitchener, Cambridge, London, Woodstock, Windsor and Quebec. Heavy lots ride on a 6 axle at up to 86,000 lb inside Ontario, about what 2 tandems carry, so a 3 coil lot moves on 1 truck. Coil sits in racks on beveled timbers, eye to side or eye to sky, as your crane or forklift needs, chained through the eye with protectors at every contact point. Details on steel coil transport.
Port coil and plate in bond
Imported coil, plate and long product come in through 15 ports. US port steel moves to Ontario in bond under Fission's own US Customs bond with a TWIC driver at the gate, and Quebec port steel clears with your broker's release before we load. Trucks are booked against the discharge date so the steel leaves inside the terminal's free time. A real one: 40 loads of port steel from Camden and Gloucester to Ontario in 2 and a half weeks.
Service centre to the customer
Slit coil on pallets rides eye to sky, stacked no more than 2 high, chained over timbers, usually in a Conestoga so every pallet is dry at every stop. Give us the drop order and the driver delivers in that order. US shippers call them steel service centers; the trucks and the securement are the same on both sides of the border. Plate that has to arrive clean rides in a Conestoga with 102 inches of clearance; plate the crane lifts goes open. Beams, bar and rebar ride on open flatbeds. See steel plate, structural steel and rebar and partial loads and multi stop.
Aluminum
Extrusions ride strapped inside a Conestoga with edge protection, never chained and never tarped, so the finish arrives unmarked. Ingots and sows move on 6 axle units inside Ontario and in from the Quebec smelters on the 4 axle. Aluminum coil comes off the ship at Trois-Rivières and rides covered to Ontario plants. See aluminum extrusion and ingots.
Getting a load quoted
Send the coil count, the weight of each coil, the orientation, both addresses and the date. For slit coil with several drops, send the stops in order. For a lane that repeats, add the loads per month. Dispatch names the trailer with the price within 1 business hour, 7 am to 5 pm ET, and answers at (905) 799 7900, press 1, 24 hours. Real moves for this kind of freight are on load stories.
Questions shippers ask
Is steel service centre trucking out of Hamilton a daily run for you?
Yes. We load coil in Hamilton every working day and deliver to service centres and plants across Ontario, Quebec and 6 US states.
Are coil racks and timbers on the truck?
Every Fission flatbed and Conestoga carries small and large coil racks and beveled 4 by 4 and 6 by 6 timbers, so the coil never sits on the bare deck.
Can you bring imported coil in from a US port?
Yes. We pick up at Baltimore, Philadelphia and Camden, Cleveland and Toledo, Burns Harbor and Chicago and other East Coast and Great Lakes ports and move it to Ontario in bond under Fission's own US Customs bond. Your broker files under our bond with written authorization from Fission.
How many trucks does a 400,000 lb coil lot take?
About 9 tandems at 45,000 lb, or 5 six axle loads at up to 86,000 lb inside Ontario. Send the coil weights and dispatch plans the trucks.
Can slit coil go to several fabricators on one truck?
Yes. Send every stop with its address, contact and hours in the order you need them. Pallets stay dry in the Conestoga at every stop.
How fast can you quote?
Within 1 business hour, 7 am to 5 pm ET, Monday to Friday. Send the coil count, the weights, the orientation and both addresses.
