73 shingle loads from an Indiana plant to Ontario in 2 and a half weeks

A roofing manufacturer ships shingles from its Indiana plant to distributor branches across Southern Ontario before the roofing season. From February 28 to March 16, 2023, Fission delivered 73 loads, up to 10 trucks a day, 62 of them to branches in 6 towns, Scarborough, Kitchener, Stoney Creek, St. Catharines, Hamilton and Mississauga, most at 15 skids and 44,415 lb a truck, in Conestogas so the wraps arrive dry.

The ask

Shingles are heavy and easy to ruin. One torn wrap or wet corner and the yard can refuse the pallet. The manufacturer needed a carrier that could take 73 loads in 2 and a half weeks out of one plant, up to 10 a day, deliver to a different branch each time, and hand over dry, square pallets at every one.

How the shingles rode

In a Conestoga the curtain opens at the dock, the forklift loads 15 skids from the side, and the curtain closes over them. Each skid is strapped over the top with edge protection, and no tarp ever touches the wrap. A tandem Conestoga carries up to 45,000 lb of shingles, which is why the loads sat at 44,415 lb.

The border and the road

Loads ran Interstate 94 across Michigan to Detroit, crossed on the Ambassador Bridge with the ACI eManifest already filed, and ran the 401 to the branch, inside our next day radius.

What the manufacturer got

73 loads across 12 Ontario towns, one carrier, one set of paperwork per load, and branches that got their shingles dry before the season. The lane is on Indiana to Ontario flatbed, and the freight is on building products transport.
